Description
Hartlaw Farm Cottages, originally a house from the late 17th century, has been converted into two dwellings. The building is constructed of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, and features a mixed blue and purple slate roof. The brick stacks have been rebuilt. It is two storeys high and consists of five bays.
In the second bay, there is a renewed door set in a surround that reuses old dressings, while the fourth bay has a renewed door in an old chamfered surround. The windows are 6-pane sash types in old openings, with recessed chamfered surrounds; the ground floor windows are square, and the upper ones are lower. There is no evidence of removed mullions or transoms, suggesting that the inner frames were made of timber. All openings, except for the door in bay two, have hoodmoulds. Additionally, there is one inserted 4-pane sash window on the ground floor that mimics the old openings.
The gables feature moulded kneelers and raised reverse-stepped coping, with stacks at both ends and along the ridge. The left side of the building shows a small chamfered attic light. The rear elevation has a blocked 2-light mullioned window and a large blind Gothick quatrefoil above an outshut.
The interior has not been seen but is reported to have been much altered. The altered rear outshut is not considered to be of special interest.
