Description
The walls surrounding the paddock to the east of Low Butterby Farmhouse are likely from the 17th century but have been altered and partly rebuilt. They enclose a rectangular paddock measuring 85 by 65 metres and are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble. The walls stand between 2.0 and 2.5 metres high and feature roughly-shaped triangular coping stones set on edge. The south-west wall includes a battered buttress near the west corner and has been partly demolished in the centre, where it has been replaced by a brick wall from a 20th-century farm building. The south-east wall is partly broken down near the south corner. The north-east wall has regularly spaced 0.5-metre high slits near the ground, possibly for drainage, and a worn stone doorway with chamfered jambs near the north corner. Additionally, the foundations of two sides of a small rectangular building can be found at the north corner. These walls are included for their group value, while the farm buildings on the outer face of the south-west wall are not of special interest.
