Description

Two detached farm buildings flank the drive to the southeast of Low Butterby Farmhouse. The first building is a former byre, now used for storage, located on the west side of the drive. It is possibly from the 17th century but was significantly altered in the 19th century. The structure is made of squared coursed rubble with a dark-purple slate roof and is a single storey with four bays. It features large squared quoins, two blocked doorways on the front flanking a blocked breather, and a doorway on the right with an inserted hit-and-miss window. The roof has stone ridge tiles, and there is a replaced Dutch door along with a breather in the gable of the right return. The left return has a tall plinth and two breathers, while the rear has a blocked chamfered doorway. A 20th-century garage at the rear is not of interest.

The second building is a barn with a lean-to shed, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. The barn is constructed of squared rubble and has a handmade brick shed. It features a Welsh slate roof for the barn and an old pantiled roof for the shed. The tall single-storey barn has five bays, flush quoins, altered openings, and a steeply-pitched roof, with a segmental archway on the right return. The shed has a low front wall with battered brick buttresses and a pent roof, along with a wide elliptical archway on the right return. Altered and semi-derelict farm buildings at the rear of the barn are not of special interest. Both buildings are included for their group value.
