Description
The barns of Houghall Farm are likely of medieval origin and were part of the lands of Durham Priory. They are constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and some quoins, topped with an asbestos tile roof. The building is arranged in an L-plan and is a single storey.
On the left side, there is a four-bay section that features high opposing doors set under stone lintels, with buttresses on the rear wall and an additional buttress on the front wall to the left. To the left, there is a boarded door with a stone sill and a wooden lintel, along with a blocked opening at the left end that has a massive stone sill.
The right section of the barn has wooden lintels above a boarded door and an empty opening, with quoins on the left side. The right return includes wooden lintels over various openings and opposing doors, one of which has been replaced with a sliding door. The last bay features two small triangular ventilation holes, one of which is blocked. There is also a blocked three-light stone-mullioned window to the left of the door and another on the rear to the left of the door.
Additionally, there is a small rendered extension on the right side.
