Description

Hollingside House is a house built in the early, mid, and later 19th century. The garden front is constructed of Flemish bond brick, while the rear is made of coursed squared sandstone. The rear wing features sandstone with brick and ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has brick chimneys and a rendered chimney at the back of the wing. The house is designed in an L-shape, with a garden front that has two storeys and three bays, where the outer bays are canted. The central feature is a French window with an overlight, and the other windows are sash windows with glazing bars. These windows have flat stone lintels, some of which are adorned with bracketed cornices, and all have projecting stone sills. The low-pitched hipped roof has later central dormers and a bracketed moulded gutter. Attached to the right side of the house is a garden wall made of sandstone on the outer side and brick on the inner side, topped with flat stone coping. There is a segmental-headed doorway leading to the lane.

From 1850 to 1852, this house was the residence of Reverend John Bacchus Dykes, a hymn writer, precentor of Durham Cathedral, and vicar of St. Oswald's Church in Durham. The house is included in the listing for its historic interest.
