Description

The disused furnace, located 40 metres south-east of Furnace Cottage, dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of squared rubble and features a stone wall with a square-headed doorway that leads into a barrel-vaulted chamber built into the hillside. This furnace was used to draw air up from an adjacent mineshaft, which is now capped. A semicircular embayment in the roadside wall likely marks the location of the mineshaft head, and the furnace played a role in improving air circulation in the lead workings below.
