Description

The railed enclosure beside the road, opposite the north-east corner of the estate offices, is a former horse track entrance to Allenheads Mine, dating from the 19th century. It is constructed of stone and cast iron, featuring a rectangular shape with iron railings atop low stone walls. The mine entrance is now infilled with rubble and other materials. This entrance is of a very unusual type, designed for ponies to descend a spiral incline at a gradient of 1 in 4 into the lead mine workings.
