Description

The War Memorial in Allenheads, designed by R.B. Aves, is made of unpolished granite and features a rusticated Celtic cross on a square plinth, which is mounted on a tapering pedestal. The front face of the memorial is inscribed with the words "To the glory of God/and in proud and loving memory/of the men of this parish who/gave their lives in the Great Wars/1914-18" along with the names of the fallen. Below this, it bears the inscription "Greater love hath no man than this that a/man lay down his life for his friends." The base has a stepped design, with three additional names spaced out along the riser of the base plinth.

This memorial was commissioned by the War Memorial Committee as a tribute to the First World War, with additions for the Second World War. It is prominently located within a small hedged enclosure at one corner of the village green. The land for the memorial was donated by Viscount Allendale, who unveiled it in October 1920. The memorial was funded through public subscription, making it a significant community project. It serves as an attractive tribute to those who lost their lives in both world wars.
