Description

The roadside traction engine shed at South Farm dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of whinstone rubble with tooled-and-margined sandstone quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The rectangular building faces the road and is located at the eastern end of a range that includes cartsheds and a granary. The front features two tall segment-headed arches that hold boarded doors. The roof is pyramidal and was formerly equipped with a central louvre or vent. Each side of the building has a stepped buttress on the front wall and a part-slatted window with external bars; the lower two-bay section to the right of the right return also has similar windows. There is a boarded door at the rear.

Inside, the shed has two queen-post roof trusses. The altered two-storey part of the range to the west is not considered to be of special interest.
