Description
The memorial to Norwegian sailors, located on the north side of Embleton Cemetery, was erected in 1917. It is made of cut sandstone and features an arched stone with a cable-moulded edge and an anchor in the vesica-shaped top panel. The inscription, which is partly worn away, reads:
"IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED FROM EXPOSURE IN AN OPEN BOAT, WHILE ON PASSAGE FROM THE DEFENCELESS NORWEGIAN STEAMER 'POLLUX' TORPEDOED BY A GERMAN SUBMARINE 40 MILES EAST OF ABERDEEN. THE BOAT REACHED SADDLE ROCKS DUNSTANBOROUGH, 22ND MARCH 1917, AFTER HAVING BEEN AT SEA FOUR DAYS SVERRE HENRIKSEN HOPEN, BERGEN; MARINUS LARSEN, TROMSO: GEORGE RASMUSSEN, DENMARK: OLAF ERIKSEN, CHRISTIANA: LUDVIG OTTEM, BERGEN: GEORG JOHS JOHANNSEN, LARVIK: ONE .....
