Description
The Embleton War Memorial is located in Embleton Cemetery, near the Grade II-listed headstone for the crew members of the Norwegian steamer Pollux, which was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1917. The memorial features a tall cross made of Greenlaw Quarry stone, which is octagonal in shape with cross arms that slightly extend from the shaft. The base of the cross shaft flares slightly to create a foot, which has a carved blind arch on the front face. This arch is inscribed with the main dedicatory message: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL AND LASTING REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH · EMBLETON WHO FELL IN THE WARS OF 1914 · 1918 1939 · 1945 ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS." A similar blind arch on the rear bears the inscription "LEST WE FORGET."
The cross is mounted on an octagonal plinth that sits on a low octagonal step. Each side of the plinth lists the names of those commemorated, organized by village. Names from the Second World War have been added to the original list from the First World War. The dedications include: EMBLETON (12 NAMES), BRUNTON (3 NAMES), STAMFORD (5 NAMES), CHRISTON BANK (2 NAMES), CRASTER (16 NAMES), NEWTON BY THE SEA (8 NAMES), FALLODEN (1 NAME), and DUNSTAN (5 NAMES).
