Description
The Radcliffe War Memorial, located 15 metres west of the clock tower in Amble, is a memorial dedicated to those who served in World War I. Constructed from ashlar with a white marble panel, it has a rectangular plan and features a two-stepped base that supports an upright structure. This upright has a moulded plinth and an inscribed panel that reads "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF RADCLIFFE/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918," surrounded by a moulded border. Below this panel, there is a plaque commemorating those who served in World War II. The memorial is flanked by columns on square bases, set diagonally, which support a moulded cornice and a blocking course topped with a raised centre-piece carved with a wreath.
Radcliffe was originally a pit village located 2 kilometers south of Amble. In 1971, the village was demolished to make way for open-cast mining, and the war memorial was relocated to its current site as the Radcliffe community was moved en masse to new estates in Amble.
