Description

The Tithe Barn, located 50 metres south-west of Monk Farmhouse, is a barn that may date back to the 17th century but was reconstructed in the 18th century or early 19th century. It is built of stone and features a slate roof with four bays. Each side wall has a vertical pair of ventilation slits for each bay, and there are threshing doors in the third bay from the south-west. The north-west door is now blocked, while the north-east gable end has two tiers of three ventilation slits and a rectangular opening in the gable. The south-west end has a large opening added in the 20th century.

Inside, the barn is divided by three cruck trusses, with the blades springing from stone corbels 1.5 metres above the floor. Each truss includes a collar and supports two purlins on each roof slope, although the ridge piece has been replaced. There is evidence of removed tie-beams and re-set collars, suggesting that the cruck frame may have been re-used from an earlier structure.

This barn represents an interesting vernacular building type and is a rare survival in this part of the country.
