Description
Thorncliff Barn is a tithe barn dating from the 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of squared rubble with hammer-dressed stone dressings and features a corrugated plastic roof. The barn has five bays with central opposed cart entries, a projecting plinth, stone quoins, two rows of vents, and three weathered buttresses, which have been weathered four times. A fourth buttress was removed from the first bay during rebuilding when a 19th-century door and window were added. The right gable has two buttresses and includes a 19th-century inserted door and a loft hatch above. The rear of the barn is identical to the front but retains all four buttresses. Inside, there are four king-post fish-bone pegged oak trusses with slightly cambered tie beams, although some original truss members have been replaced. A 20th-century lean-to stabling at the rear is not of special interest.
