Description

The Hollingworth War Memorial commemorates the First World War, the Second World War, and subsequent conflicts since 1945. Erected between 1925 and 1926, the memorial's designer is unknown. It takes the form of a Latin cross set on a high, octagonal pedestal raised on three octagonal steps, and stands on a semi-circular platform bounded by a low wall that steps out at the front to flank the platform.

The memorial stands on a semi-circular, stone-flagged platform with a stone kerb at the straight entrance. The cross has a narrow, relief outline and is set on a tall, slightly tapering, rectangular shaft with an octagonal, moulded base. This stands atop a deep, octagonal pedestal with a moulded, sloping cap and chamfered plinth. Panels on the pedestal bear inscriptions in slightly-raised lead lettering. The front panel reads: "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF / THE MEN OF / HOLLINGWORTH / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN / THE EUROPEAN WAR / 1914-1918. / ‘AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN / AND IN THE MORNING / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM'." The side panels list the surnames and initials of 20 men who died in the First World War on each side (40 in total). The right-hand side panel includes the dates 1939-1945 and the surnames and initials of 10 military casualties, with an inscription noting civilians killed by enemy action, listing members of the Pickering family; a further name is inscribed on the adjacent panel. The rear panel reads: "ERECTED BY / PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION / 1925." The left-hand side panel reads: "IN PROUD MEMORY / OF / THE MEN AND WOMEN OF / THE VILLAGE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AT / THE CALL OF / THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE YEARS SINCE / 1945 / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM," with a single name on the adjacent panel, alongside the inscription "IRAQ." The pedestal rests on three shallow, octagonal, chamfered steps. The low wall surrounding the platform is constructed of roughly coursed stone with flat stone coping. It steps out at the entrance with shorter flanking walls that reduce in height, featuring concave curved coping. Two square stone blocks with inset pyramid caps are positioned at the return angles of the stepped wall. Modern, decorative iron railings along the curved wall are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
