Description
Whitfield Hall is a country house built in 1785 by Newton of Newcastle, which incorporates earlier structures. It was remodeled and had a second floor added in 1856, with further alterations made in 1969. The building features ashlar stone, with the rear and north wing constructed from squared stone and rubble, topped with slate roofs.
The main block has two short rear wings and a single-storey section added in the 20th century. The main south front is three storeys high and has five bays, arranged symmetrically with a projecting three-bay center. The plinth and band are interrupted by ground-floor windows. A central tripartite French window is framed by an architrave with panelled pilasters, a modillion cornice, and a balustrade; this was reset forward in 1969 to form the front of a new porch. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, some of which have been renewed, and are shorter on the second floor. The first and second floor windows are set in architraves, with cornices; the first-floor cornices are supported by console brackets, while the second-floor windows have bracketed sills. The building features a modillion eaves cornice and a balustraded parapet, with a hipped roof that has stacks mostly rebuilt in yellow brick.
The irregular returns have similar fenestration, each featuring a canted bay. The north right wing is three storeys tall with eight irregular bays, and the first short bay is reputed to be a remnant of the medieval Whitfield Tower. The ground floor of the second and third bays has old 15-pane sashes, while the other windows are mostly renewed sashes; the wing also has a balustraded parapet. The rear elevation of the main block displays a 20-pane sash window with geometrical glazing.
Inside, there is a geometrical staircase with column-on-vase balusters and a wreathed grip handrail. The ballroom features an egg-and-dart cornice and a panelled plaster ceiling with floral decoration, while the dining room has a plaster frieze.
