Description
Shaw House Farmhouse is a house that was formerly an inn. The west wing, which contains the kitchen, dates from the early to mid 18th century, while the south wing is from the mid 18th century and the north wing is from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of roughly-squared stone with cut dressings, and the 19th-century part features tooled and margined stonework. Some sections are rendered and whitewashed, and it has a stone slate roof.
The south elevation has two storeys and three irregular bays. There is an altered flush-panelled door on the left side, set in a chamfered stone surround, with a plate-glass sash window above it. The flanking bays have French windows with 4-pane sashes above. The end stacks include one that is rendered on the left. The fenestration of the west range has been altered. The north range is partly single-storeyed and features a 16-pane Yorkshire sash window flanked by boarded doors, with an attached pent privy on the far right.
Inside, there is a closed-string stair with stick balusters and a moulded handrail. The fireplace in the south range has a chamfered surround and a domed recess for a set pot. There are two fielded-panel doors in the west range. The cellar beneath the west range has a segmental brick vault and an old well.
