Description
The remains of a castle curtain wall and tower, dating from the early 15th century, are incorporated into Bywell Castle House, which was remodeled in the 19th century and again in 1912 and later. The structure is built of squared stone. The south wall of the house connects to the left with a gatehouse. It features a chamfered plinth and various 20th-century openings, including one blocked square-headed window above a 20th-century doorway. To the right, a projecting wing incorporates the castle's gun house, which has a double plinth on the south side and a chamfered window above a later lintel. The medieval masonry extends to a 20th-century doorway on the right return, with a circular gun loop positioned above the plinth. The interior has not been seen, but it is said that the basement vault of the gun house survives. The rest of the house is not considered to be of special interest.
