Description

Bywell Bridge over the River Tyne, located in Bywell Parish, was built between 1836 and 1838 by George Basevi. The bridge is constructed of tooled ashlar stone, except for the parapet. It features five segmental moulded arches of equal height that rise from hollow-chamfered imposts. The cutwaters have curved faces beneath a bold roll moulding, with the upper parts shaped triangularly and topped with a prominent hollow-chamfered cornice. There is a moulded cornice below the parapet, which includes a moulded plinth and cornice, along with a raised panel above each arch. The internal face of the parapet is similar, with segmental coping. The bridge has serpentine wing walls and two simpler flood arches without a parapet on the south side.
