Description

Stocksfield House is a former headmaster's house for Bywell School, built in 1832. The building is constructed of squared stone with tooled ashlar used for the porch and dressings, and it features a Welsh slate roof. It is designed in the Tudor Gothic style.

The south elevation has two storeys and two bays, with a chamfered plinth. On the left side, there is a projecting porch that contains a vertical-panelled door set in a chamfered pointed arch, complete with a hollow-chamfered hoodmould. Below the moulded parapet, which steps up over a central plain recessed panel, there is a moulded string. The porch has single-light windows on its returns and to the right, while above the porch, there is a two-light window. To the right of the porch, there are two-light windows, with the upper window located in a corbelled-out gabled half dormer that features a serpentine traceried bargeboard. Above this upper window, there is a date panel displaying the Allendale arms. All openings are framed in chamfered surrounds. The eaves overhang, and there is a central stack with four short diagonally-set shafts.

The right return consists of two gabled bays with a three-light window below and a two-light window above, both adorned with similar ornamental bargeboards. The rear elevation shows the porch projection with renewed doors set in a 4-centred chamfered arch. The first floor is corbelled out, featuring two-light windows and the Allendale arms in the gable, along with ornamental bargeboards.
