Description

Bywell Bridge over the River Tyne, located partly in Broomley and Stocksfield parish, was built between 1836 and 1838 by George Basevi. The bridge is constructed of tooled ashlar stone, except for the parapet. It features five segmental moulded arches of equal height that rise from hollow-chamfered imposts. The cutwaters have curved faces beneath a bold roll moulding, with the upper parts shaped triangularly and topped with a bold hollow-chamfered cornice. Below the parapet, there is a moulded cornice, along with a moulded plinth and cornice, and a raised panel above each arch. The internal face of the parapet is similar, with segmental coping. The bridge also has serpentine wing walls and two simpler flood arches without a parapet on the south side.
