Description

The terrace and pergola, with paving, located to the north of Whalton Manor House, were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1908 and 1909. The structure features squared stone with cut dressings, timber, and wrought iron. It includes a six-bay pergola on a raised terrace, supported by square piers; only the end bays have full-height piers that carry cambered timber lintels. The central section has lower piers on the south side and a low wall on the north side. The east end is closed off by a decorative wrought-iron screen. Quadrant-plan steps lead up to the west end of the terrace, where the southern end pier of the pergola serves as the center of a circular area paved with radial setts.
