Description

WHALTON WHALTON VILLAGE NZ 1381 (North side) 12/167 Terrace and pergola, with paving, to north of Whalton Manor House GV II Terrace, pergola and paving, 1908-9 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Squared stone with cut dressings, timber, wrought iron. 6-bay pergola on raised terrace, with square piers; only the end bays have full-height piers, carrying cambered timber lintels. Central part has lower piers on south and low wall only on north. East end closed by decorative wrought-iron screen. Quadrant-plan steps up to west end of terrace, where southern end pier of pergola forms centre of circle paved with radial setts.
