Description

West Manor House is a house dated 1729, featuring the initials I:R on the lintel, and possibly incorporating earlier fabric. It underwent alterations in 1908-1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Mrs. Eustace Smith, at which time it was incorporated into the Manor House; it is now a separate tenancy. The house is constructed of squared stone, except for rubble on the ground floor left return, and has a stone slate roof.

The building has two storeys and five symmetrical bays, with a chamfered plinth. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight, set in a wave-moulded raised stone surround with a shaped lintel above. It has 12-pane sash windows with raised lintels and stepped keystones. The left gable is coped on moulded kneelers, and there are stepped-and-corniced stacks at the ends. The left return displays two four-pane attic casements. The rear elevation includes twin projecting wings, with the right wing extended by Lutyens.

Inside, there are some contemporary fireplaces with later ironwork and panelled shutters. The sitting room features a transverse ceiling beam with swelled chamfer stops of 17th-century style. There is a dog-leg open-string staircase leading to the attic, with urn-on-vase balusters, a moulded, ramped and wreathed handrail, and a moulded newel post at the base, along with shaped tread ends. The roof structure consists of collar-beam trusses with overlapped apices carrying the ridge, with joints that are nailed rather than pegged.

Before the alterations in 1908-1909, the house was known as the Mansion House. The current dwelling includes one bay of Lutyens' link block.
