Description
The garden walls surrounding the lower lawn to the northwest of Whalton Manor House were built between 1908 and 1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The attached outbuilding dates from the 18th century or early 19th century and was altered by Lutyens. The walls are constructed of rubble with cut dressings and feature brick buttresses on the north wall. The roofs are covered with stone slate. The flat-coped walls run along the north, east, and south sides of the lawn, with steps leading up to a raised terrace at the northwest corner. The north wall has internal stepped buttresses. The outbuilding, which backs onto the south wall, includes a boarded door, a half-glazed door, and two small windows in the south wall. Its roof is hipped to the right and features a gabled roof dormer, with a similar dormer on the rear. Decorative leading is present on the windows. The left return of the outbuilding shows boarded double doors beneath a timber lintel.
