Description

The garden wall surrounding the northernmost lawn at Whalton Manor House, along with an attached summerhouse, was built between 1908 and 1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The wall is constructed of brick in an irregular bond, featuring a rubble internal face and cut dressings, with pantiles on the summerhouse roof and the adjacent canopy. The wall encloses three sides of a rectangular lawn, with the north wall comprising six bays and the side walls having three bays each, all divided by brick piers topped with tapering flat finials. The hexagonal summerhouse located at the north-west corner has an open front supported by two rustic wooden posts, paired 12-pane casements, a round window at the rear, and a steep pyramidal roof that also features a similar finial. There is a doorway in the adjacent part of the west wall, which is sheltered by a pent canopy.
