Description
Otterburn Mill is an 18th-century woollen mill that was extended in 1821 and around 1930. It features roughly-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The building consists of three sections. The central section, built in 1821, is three storeys high with six bays. It mainly has 16-pane sash windows on the ground and first floors, although four of these have been replaced with 6-pane sashes. Above, there are shorter 9-pane sashes. In the lower left-hand corner, there are two segmental arches over the mill race that runs through the building.
To the right, there is a lower two-storey section that has older masonry but features early 20th-century openings. This section was extended to the right around 1930. The single-storey section to the left contains the dye house and drying room.
Inside, the original water wheels were replaced in the late 19th century by a surviving turbine. The interior also contains much early 19th-century gearing and a waulk hammer or fulling hammer. Beneath the floor of the dye house, there are two brick furnaces. The drying house features a perforated iron floor and rows of racks below the roof, where cloth was hung to dry with heat rising from the furnaces below.
