Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a parish church built in 1858 by John Dobson. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Lakeland slate roof, showcasing a Decorated style of architecture. The church includes a south-west tower with a spire, a nave, a chancel, and a north vestry.
The tower is small and octagonal, with gabled buttresses on alternating sides. It has trefoiled bell openings set in blank trefoiled arches, separated by columns with shaft rings, and is topped with a low octagonal spire.
The nave consists of four bays and has a gabled porch on the left, which features a multi-moulded, pointed-arched doorway. There are three one-light windows with cusping and gabled buttresses with offsets between each bay. The west end has two 2-light windows with a buttress in between, along with a traceried lunette above.
The chancel is two bays long and has 2-light windows, while the east window is a five-light design with Geometric tracery. The roofs are steeply pitched and gabled, with overhanging coping and foliated cross finials.
Inside the church, the porch features a cross head, and the open timber roofs are supported by scissor braces. The rere arches of all openings have labels with head stops. Notably, the altar frontal is a high-relief wood copy of 'The Last Supper' by Leonardo Da Vinci.
