Description
The lodge and gates at Alnwick Cemetery were built in 1856, designed by F R Wilson and constructed by Armstrong and Hudspeth. The building is made of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with raised coped gables and plain kneelers, along with two wall stacks. It has an L-plan layout and is a single storey with an attic.
The street-facing side includes a gable wing on the right with a projecting canted bay window that has four pointed arch lights, topped by a stone roof. Below this is a three-light window with a taller central light and plain sashes. To the left, there is a stepped rubble wall connected to a small single-storey structure. The entrance front features a projecting two-storey porch with a chamfered opening and an inner door, above which is a small square casement. To the left, a snuff square window has been converted into a doorway.
On the south elevation, the projecting gable wing has a pair of plain sash windows on the ground floor and two similar windows above. The gates are attached to the north-west corner of the lodge, featuring a low wall with a chamfered open panel and iron railings, along with a square ashlar gatepier topped with an octagonal cap. There is a pair of iron gates, followed by another similar gatepier and a wall with an open panel and iron railings. The lodge and gates are included for their group value.
