Description
The South Chapel at Alnwick Cemetery is a cemetery chapel built in 1856. It was designed by F R Wilson and constructed by Armstrong and Hudspeth. The building is made of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with coped gables and finials. It has a chamfered plinth, angle buttresses, quoins, and a moulded band.
On the north front, there is a projecting gabled porch to the left with a pointed arch doorway. To the right, there are a pair of small pointed arch windows followed by two single similar windows. The west gable front features a tall two-light pointed arch window with plate tracery and a hood mould, along with a small quatrefoil above. To the right, there is a small window and a pointed arch doorway, topped by a tall circular stone chimney stack at the junction.
The east gable front includes a projecting single-storey narthex with four small pointed arch windows and stone roofs, above which is a tall three-light pointed arch window with unusual plate tracery and a hood mould. At the top of the gable, there is a small bellcote.
