Description

The farm buildings at Low Hartleycleugh, located 10 metres north of the farmhouse, consist of a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, along with an early 19th-century byre and hayloft to the north. The structure is built from rubble with stone slate roofs. The bastle house has two storeys and features four irregular bays.

On the ground floor, there is a blocked doorway with a worn lintel inscription and a small four-pane window to the right. The first floor has a chamfered doorway that has been blocked and replaced with a later window. To the left, there are two two-light mullioned windows, one of which has been enlarged while the other is blocked. To the right, there is a small chamfered window.

The byre and hayloft to the right include a boarded door and two fixed windows on the ground floor, along with a boarded pitching door and slit vents above. The left side of the building shows the original entrance to the bastle's byre, which has a heavy lintel and is now blocked with a window inserted; above and to the left, there is a second blocked door. The rear elevation is obscured by a 20th-century lean-to. The interior has been altered, and there is a 20th-century shed to the far right that is not of special interest.
