Description
The Old School House and The Old Boys School are a former school building dating to 1851. Constructed of squared stone with ashlar dressings, the building has a tooled and margined plinth and quoins. It is one and two storeys high, featuring seven bays with a symmetrical design. The central two-storey bay projects, displaying a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above. A panel within the gable displays the inscription: "Carr Shield School/ Built by and on land belonging to/ W.B. Beaumont, Esq./ For the education of children/ Of all religious denominations/ 1851".
Flanking sections are of a single tall storey, each with a centrally located gabled porch projecting forward. The porches contain renewed doors with tall overlights, and panels above with the inscriptions "GIRLS SCHOOL" (left) and "BOYS SCHOOL" (right). Coped gables are present throughout. The intermediate bays have tall tripartite sash windows. All openings are set within recessed and hollow-chamfered surrounds. A corniced stone stack sits atop the left gable, while tall corniced stone stacks flank the centre bay. The right gable is topped by a bellcote carried on four block corbels. A date panel is located below a four-centred-arched opening, with a cornice above and triangular finials. The rear elevation has been altered.
