Description
This range of farm buildings, located 30 metres south of Kirkhaugh Farmhouse, includes a bastle house, barn, and cottage. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with some alterations made in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The bastle is constructed of large irregular rubble and features a 20th-century asbestos roof, while the barn and cottage have stone slate roofs and a stone stack on the cottage gable.
The bastle is two storeys high and has an irregular shape. The ground floor has 20th-century windows, and the first floor includes a 20th-century pitching door, a 6-pane fixed window, and a 12-pane sash window above a 2-light mullioned window. To the left, the barn features two tiers of slit vents and a boarded door, while the cottage on the far left has a boarded opening on the first floor. The right return of the bastle has an inserted stable door and heavy corbels, likely intended for an external stack above. The first floor also includes a 9-pane fixed window in a stone surround, along with pigeon holes and alighting bands on either side of the gable.
On the rear elevation, the bastle is obscured by a 20th-century outbuilding. The barn has a central cart entrance with a timber lintel and slit vents, while the cottage to the right has a boarded door in a stone surround and a 6-pane window above. Inside the bastle, there is an original byre entrance in the west wall, featuring a chamfered segmental-pointed arch, and hearth corbels above an inserted door in the east wall. The first floor includes a fireplace with a lintel supported by corbels and two old roof trusses with ogival principals linked by pairs of collars.
