Description
Slaggyford Station is a former railway station built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from squared rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and three symmetrical bays, with the central bay projecting forward. This bay contains a half-glazed door that is sheltered by a pedimented hood. Above the door, there is a 2-light mullioned window, with each light featuring an 8-pane sash. The gable above is steeply pitched and has coped edges with kneelers. The flanking bays also have similar 2-light windows, and all openings are surrounded by chamfered edges. The gables are coped and have kneelers, while the ashlar end stacks are topped with paired corniced chimneys set diagonally. The left side of the building shows similar mullioned windows. On the right side, there is a single-storey former waiting room that has a later wooden porch and a 19th-century sash window to the right, along with a right end stack featuring paired square corniced chimneys. The Alston branch of the Newcastle-Carlisle railway, which this station served, was opened in 1852.
