Description
The Knarsdale War Memorial is a tall granite structure, approximately 4 meters high, located in the northeast corner of the churchyard of St Jude’s Church, which is not listed. The memorial features a Celtic cross that rests on the corniced top of a tall, square pedestal. This pedestal is supported by a two-stage base and is surrounded by a low square kerb that has an iron rail mounted on metal corner posts.
The front face of the cross is decorated with a sheathed sword carved in relief, which is suspended from the wheel-head by its sword belt. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "IN HONOUR OF THE FOLLOWING WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR" followed by the names of five individuals. Below this inscription, the dates 1914-1918 are carved in low relief at the foot of the pedestal. The front face of the upper stage of the base includes the inscription "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION." Additionally, there is a dedication for the Second World War on one side of the pedestal, which reads "1939 – 1945" followed by the names of two individuals.
