Description

The Village Hall, originally a Sunday School, was built in 1855 and is associated with Rev. Robert William Bosanquet and his wife Caroline, as indicated by the initials R.W.B. and C.B. The building is constructed of tooled squared stone with tooled-and-margined ashlar dressings and features a roof made of large blue slates with an ornamental orange tile ridge. It has a T-plan layout.

The west front is a single-storey structure with three symmetrical bays. It has a chamfered plinth and a projecting center that includes boarded double doors set under a flat-pointed arch within a square frame, accompanied by a hoodmould and small flanking windows. Above the doors is a datestone, and there is a re-set datestone inscribed with "1623 T.S., A.S." from Thomas Salkeld and his wife, which was taken from the previous 'Mid Hall' that occupied the site. There is a slit window beneath a coped gable on moulded kneelers, topped with a finial. The flanking bays feature 2-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds and chamfered corbels at the eaves. The gable ends have stepped coping on moulded kneelers and chimney stacks with diagonally-set banded shafts. The windows are fixed casements with horizontal glazing bars, set in double-chamfered surrounds.

The right return of the building displays a projecting stepped chimney breast, which includes a sunk panel that encloses a re-set sundial dated MDCC. The rear elevation has three similar 2-light windows. There is a rendered pent extension to the north, which is not of special interest.
