Description
The farm buildings to the north of Witton Shields Farmhouse are early 19th century planned structures. They are built from coursed rubble with stone dressings, except for the eastern part of the northern range, which is made of squared stone. The roofs are primarily slate, with pantiles used on the gingang. The buildings form three sides of a rectangular yard, which is enclosed on the south by a rubble wall featuring gabled coping. There is a wide gateway at the east end and a narrower opening at the west end.
The northern range consists of two parts: the left section is single-storey and has three elliptical-arched cart entrances, while the right section is two-storey with two elliptical-arched cart entrances and an external stone stair leading to a boarded loft door. There are two windows to the right of this section. The eastern part contains single-storey byres with three boarded doors, and the western barn features three boarded doors along with a slit vent between the left pair. At the rear, there is a hexagonal gingang supported by two stepped stone piers, with two rebuilt in brick, and it has an unusually steep conical roof.
