Description
The garden and yard walls west of Witton Shields Tower are the remains of a former house, likely dating back to medieval times. These walls are constructed from roughly-shaped large blocks with irregular quoins. They include the west and north walls of a building oriented north-south, featuring a large stack at the north end and a later addition beyond. The walls generally stand to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres. The west wall contains slopstone and various blocked openings. Notably, the unusual positioning of a now-blocked doorway in the west end of Witton Shields Tower aligns with a doorway in the remaining stub of the east wall at the ruined house, suggesting that this structure may date from the 16th century or earlier.
