Description

Old Mill is a mill that likely dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of roughly-squared stone with cut quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building has three storeys and two bays. On the ground floor, there is a boarded door on the far left and three-light wooden-framed windows. A corniced stack is located at the left end. Adjacent to the left is the Mill House. The right side of the building shows a low central opening leading to the wheelpit, with an iron pivot above for the attachment of an external steam engine.

Inside, there is an overshot waterwheel with a cast-iron hub and wooden spokes, along with a large cast-iron flywheel positioned above. At the time of the survey, the interior of the main part of the mill was in poor condition due to fire damage.

The nearby Birkey Burn did not provide a consistent flow of water to operate the mill year-round, which led to the construction of a nearby windmill at Lanthorn Cottage in the 18th century and the later use of a steam engine in the 19th century.
