Description

The Old Windmill, which is part of Lanthorn Cottage, is a windmill tower built in 1720, featuring the initials R R (for Richard Ridley) on the lintel. It was later converted into a house in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure is made of squared tooled stone and has a Lakeland slate roof. It is a circular, three-storey tower with a chamfered plinth.

On the ground floor, there is an old doorway with a broadly-chamfered stone surround that now opens into the later cottage. A 12-pane sash window on the south side has iron bars on the exterior, and there is a sundial incised on the sill. The east side features a blocked door, while the north side has a renewed 9-pane fixed window in a chamfered surround with a dated lintel. The first floor includes a 12-pane sash window on the south and a blocked chamfered light on the east. The second floor has four small chamfered lights, with the one on the east being blocked. The roof is pyramidal with a stepped stack on the east side.

Inside, the ground floor has a fireplace with a tooled stone surround, and the first floor features heavy ceiling beams that show mortices for the framework of the mill machinery, along with carpenter's marks.

An attached cottage built around 1977 is not of interest. The windmill operated in the 18th century alongside the nearby watermill, Acomb Mill. It is shown on Ordnance Survey maps as The Lantern.
