Description
Riding Farmhouse, dated 1834, with mid-19th century outbuildings to the left and a dairy around 1900, is constructed primarily of roughly-squared stone, with tooled and margined dressings to the front. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, with the exception of the dairy, which has a Lakeland slate roof with an ornamental red tile ridge to the gable over the entrance.
The west elevation of the house is two storeys and three bays, displaying a symmetrical design. It features raised quoins and a central flush-panelled door beneath a patterned overlight, set within a raised stone surround. The windows are 12-pane sash windows with slightly-projecting sills. Coped gables are topped with stepped end stacks. A tall wall with arched coping and a small casement, fronting a pent roofed outbuilding, connects to other farm buildings.
The right return presents a projecting, semi-octagonal dairy within a nine-bay loggia featuring square piers and arched braces. The loggia has a gablet with bargeboards above the central entrance, and double half-glazed doors within a chamfered surround, flanked by two-light chamfered mullioned windows. Further, leaded latticed and margined casements with cloudy yellow glass are present in flanking sections. The dairy’s roof is canted and hipped.
The rear elevation of the house has a flush-panelled door set beneath a raised, shield-shaped tablet displaying the date and initials T.D., and a 12-pane sash stair window with radial glazing in a round-arched head.
The interior of the farmhouse contains early 19th-century furnishings and fittings, particularly in the kitchen. The dairy’s interior is divided into two octagonal rooms, lined with white glazed brick, one featuring marble shelves, floor, and a central fountain. The ceilings are boarded with central traceried vents.
