26/25 Walls around Winter Garden approx 150 yds west of Belsay Hall

GV ll

Garden walls. Early C19 by Sir Charles Monck. West wall altered c.1906 by Sir Arthur Middleton. Ashlar.

On south side, terrace retaining wall c. 8ft. high and 3 ft. thick with slightly- arched moulded coping.

On west side high walling, largely with plain coping. To left, however, a section about 10 ft. long with modillion cornice, and coping with repeated raised gabled projections. This ends in a very large, taller square, corniced pier with blocking course, antefixae and 4 square pyramidal caps. This pier is hollow and a removable stone to the rear gives access to the flue within.
