Description

The walls around the Winter Garden, located approximately 150 yards west of Belsay Hall, were built in the early 19th century by Sir Charles Monck. The west wall was altered around 1906 by Sir Arthur Middleton and is constructed of ashlar stone.

On the south side, there is a terrace retaining wall that stands about 8 feet high and 3 feet thick, featuring a slightly-arched moulded coping. The west side has high walling, mostly with plain coping. However, there is a section on the left that is about 10 feet long and includes a modillion cornice, with coping that has repeated raised gabled projections. This section culminates in a large, taller square pier that has a cornice, a blocking course, antefixae, and four square pyramidal caps. The pier is hollow, and a removable stone at the rear provides access to the flue inside.
