BELSAY BELSAY NZ 0878 26/21 Walled Garden and Garden Cottages north of Belsay Hall

GV II

Walled garden with lean-to sheds and garden cottages. Early C19 by Sir Charles Monck. Dressed stone partly lined in brick. Lakeland slate roofs.

In 2 sections.

On east side, vegetable garden has walls c.15 ft. high around north and east sides, lower walls around other two sides. Pattern of flat pilasters and close- set gabled crenellations. Segment-headed carriage entry with panelled doubled doors, on east side. Cottage in north-west corner: irregular plan, largely single storey with 2-storey, 1-bay section in centre. 6-panel door and various windows including 6-pane sashes and 15-pane casements. Single-storey parts have gabled roofs, 2-storey part has shallow pyramidal roof. Tall square corniced stacks.

West of this more walling in similar style, c. 150 yards long, broken near centre by another later C19 2-storey, 3-bay cottage with panelled door, sash windows and gabled roof, which is included for group value.
