Description

The walled garden and garden cottages north of Belsay Hall are an early 19th-century structure designed by Sir Charles Monck. The garden features dressed stone that is partly lined in brick, topped with Lakeland slate roofs, and is divided into two sections.

On the east side, the vegetable garden is enclosed by walls approximately 15 feet high on the north and east sides, with lower walls on the other two sides. The walls display a pattern of flat pilasters and closely spaced gabled crenellations. There is a segment-headed carriage entry with panelled double doors on the east side. In the north-west corner, there is a cottage with an irregular plan, primarily single storey, but with a two-storey, one-bay section in the centre. This cottage features a six-panel door and various windows, including six-pane sashes and 15-pane casements. The single-storey sections have gabled roofs, while the two-storey part has a shallow pyramidal roof, complemented by tall square corniced stacks.

To the west, there is additional walling in a similar style, extending approximately 150 yards. This walling is interrupted near the centre by a later 19th-century two-storey, three-bay cottage, which includes a panelled door, sash windows, and a gabled roof. This cottage is included for its group value.
