Description

The steps and terrace wall located approximately 5 yards south of Belsay Hall were built between 1810 and 1817 by Sir Charles Monck. The structure is made of ashlar and features a moulded plinth facing the house. The wall is about 80 yards long and stands approximately 7 feet high from the lower terrace and about 2 feet high from the upper terrace. It has slightly ridged coping with moulded edges. The wall is broken twice in front of the house and once to the west by flights of 10 moulded steps, which have similar side walls that end in low oblong piers.
