Description

Moor Houses Farmhouse and the attached range to the west is a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an extension added in the late 17th century and a further addition from the 19th century. The building is now used as an agricultural store. It is constructed of large rubble with heavy, roughly-shaped quoins, stone dressings, and a stone-slate roof. There are rubble stacks on the left gable and on the ridge, along with a brick gable stack on the farmhouse. The structure is two storeys high and has five irregular bays, featuring a bastle with an extension to the right and a taller farmhouse on the far right.

The bastle has an inserted doorway with the remains of an original first-floor doorway above it, and the extension has a doorway with a chamfered surround. The fenestration is irregular. The left return, which is visible inside the farm building, shows a central byre entrance of the bastle with a chamfered round-headed doorway. There is a ruinous outshut at the rear. Inside, the bastle features a corbelled first-floor fireplace, while the extension has a first-floor fireplace with a flattened triangular head in a square frame and an old collar-beam roof truss. Later farm buildings are slightly set back to the left and are not of interest. This building is notable for illustrating its development over three centuries through successive additions rather than complete rebuilding.
