Description

The war memorial, dating from around 1920, is located 30 metres south-west of the Parish Church in Haydon Bridge. It is made of stone, bronze, and cast iron. The memorial features a tooled stone base with an inscribed panel dedicated to the soldiers who died in the First World War (1914-1919) and carries a life-size bronze figure of an infantryman. A plaque commemorating the dead of the Second World War (1939-1945) is affixed to the stone base. The monument is set on a shaped stone step and is supported by cast-iron piers that once held chains. It is flanked by two short walls made of rock-faced and margined stone and is backed by the churchyard wall. Originally, the memorial was located on the south side of Ratcliffe Road, just west of the old bridge.
