Description

No 2 Station Cottages is a ticket office and stationmaster's house, now a residential home, built around 1835. The building is constructed from squared and tooled stone with ashlar dressings and a plinth. It features a hipped slate roof and has a stepped and corniced brick ridge stack as well as a stepped and corniced ashlar lateral stack. Designed in the Neo-Tudor style, the former front elevation (north) includes a projecting ashlar portico with three flattened Tudor arches at the front and one in each return. This portico encloses a 20th-century half-glazed door with an oblong fanlight, flanked by narrow sash windows and narrow blind windows.

On the right elevation, narrow blind windows are positioned beside a recessed section that has a modillion cornice and a former two-light window, now a sash, beneath a hoodmould. A second similar recessed section contains two narrow sashes, and the end of the cottage is slightly recessed with a stepped stack projection. The left elevation is similar but features a 20th-century window at the end of the cottage. The rear elevation has an eaves cornice and includes two narrow sashes, a door, and a small window. All door and window openings have recessed and chamfered surrounds.

This building is an important and well-preserved example of an early railway structure with notable architectural features.
