Description
The East Garston War Memorial, built in 1920, commemorates those who died in the First World War. It is located on a triangular lawned area at the junction of Back Street and Roger’s Lane. The memorial features a two-stepped, low square base, a roughly-carved plinth, and a tapering shaft topped with a Latin cross. The north face of the plinth has the inscription: "TO THE GALLANT MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" followed by names. Below this, a rectangular granite plaque was added to the base after the Second World War, inscribed with "1938-1945" and names.
The lawned area surrounding the memorial is enclosed by metal railings, which include a pedestrian gate on the north-east side; these railings were added in 1923.
