Description
The Old School is a building that dates back to around 1860, likely designed by S.S. Teulon. It is constructed from coursed rubble with cut quoins and dressings, topped with a green slate roof. The building has an irregular cruciform plan and features a design reminiscent of the 13th century.
The front elevation is one storey high and consists of five irregular bays. The second bay projects forward and includes a transomed three-light window with a finial cross above it. To the left of this bay, there is a stepped stack with an ornate terracotta pot. Flanking the central bay are lower gabled porches, each with pointed arches and trefoiled finials; the left porch is now glazed, while the right porch contains a door with decorative ironwork.
Behind the left porch is a low block with a coped left gable. The full-height block behind the right porch extends two bays to the right and features paired lancet windows, a block corbel table at the eaves, and a coped right gable. The building includes single-stepped buttresses, kneelers with sunk trefoiled panels, and gabled dormers with slatted vents, all topped with steeply pitched roofs. The returns of the building display similar window arrangements. Notably, the roof of the central cross-wing was once topped by a tall wooden bellcote. The Old School is included for its group value.
