Description

The Abbey Gatehouse, which also serves as a Post Office, dates back to the 15th century and incorporates earlier elements. It was remodeled around 1753. The building is constructed from rubble with stone dressings and features a flat lead roof.

On the south elevation, the gatehouse has two storeys and two wide bays. The right bay contains a segmental-arched gateway, while the left bay features a vertical-panelled door with an overlight set in a hollow-chamfered surround, complete with a hoodmould. This door is flanked by small-paned shop windows that sit under ogee arches, also with hoodmoulds; notably, the right window includes an integral Victoria Regina letter box. The first floor showcases a six-light window with a king mullion and a two-light window to the right, both adorned with hoodmoulds. Below a moulded embattled parapet, there is a chamfered string course.

The right return of the building displays a 19th-century external stair leading to a boarded door set in a chamfered elliptical-arched surround, which bears the date 1753 incised on the jamb. There is also a garderobe projection on the right, featuring a chamfered loop. The rear elevation presents a similar gateway arch with a hollow chamfer, along with small sash windows above that have hollow-chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds.

Inside, the gate passage and the adjacent chamber, which houses the Post Office, both feature barrel vaults. The first-floor room in the west bay has been integrated into the adjacent house. The first floor of the gatehouse, which was originally a large chamber, may have served as a courtroom and includes a chamfered doorway leading to the garderobe.
