Description

Nos. 1 and 2 The Square are a pair of houses that form part of the outer court range of a former monastery. They were remodeled and extended to the rear in the mid-18th century. The buildings are constructed of rubble with tooled dressings and feature a stone slate roof. The front elevation is two storeys high and consists of five irregular bays. The doors in bays 2 and 3 have been renewed, with the door in bay 2 set in a chamfered surround. The windows include renewed 12-pane sashes in bay 5 and the ground floor of bay 4, while bay 1 has 20th-century windows. In bay 2, there are remains of a blocked shouldered arch with a small chamfered window to the right. A brick stack is located at the right end. The rear elevation reveals a parallel gabled 18th-century block at the back of No. 2.

Inside, No. 1 features a plain 18th-century fireplace with a narrow-chamfered surround. No. 2 contains a 13th or 14th-century doorway, now leading to a cupboard, in the former rear wall. This doorway has a chamfered shouldered arch and a drawbar tunnel in the jamb. The staircase in the 18th-century rear extension has a closed string, stick balusters, and a moulded handrail. There are also old four-panel doors with H hinges. The roof of the front section is supported by three principal-rafter trusses with chamfered tiebeams.
